Testing the new Subaru Forester

The sixth-generation crossover combines nostalgia and modern handling

Externally, the sixth generation Subaru Forester features angular wheel arches, while the interior evokes mixed emotions: it simultaneously seems outdated compared to modern Chinese competitors and surprisingly comfortable in everyday use. Stiff visors, familiar instrument panel with round scales, a thin steering wheel with many buttons — all this is reminiscent of cars from the past decade.

At the same time, the Forester's interior is surprisingly ergonomic. The air conditioner works without unnecessary settings, the windows do not fog up, and the seats with suede inserts reliably hold the body. Useful little things like a retractable extension in the visors create a sense of thoughtfulness. You can feel that the Japanese have maintained a balance between the old school and the modern needs of the driver.

A separate story is the X-Mode system for off-road driving. Despite the well-thought-out logic of operation, switching modes has to be done through the display, which is inconvenient and violates the overall feeling of the "old school". But Si-Drive allows you to change the engine response with a button on the steering wheel, you can immediately feel the difference: Sport mode makes the car more dynamic, and Intelligent mode makes it economical and safe on slippery roads.

In terms of driving, the Forester is pleasing: the 2.5-liter boxer engine powerfully accelerates the car, and the symmetrical all-wheel drive and thoughtful weight distribution provide stability on any road. The car confidently holds its trajectory, comfortably passes turns and demonstrates the advantages of Subaru in handling and torque distribution. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle is about 11.1 l/100 km.

The Subaru Forester is built on the new Subaru Global Platform, which provides body rigidity, excellent noise insulation and suspension comfort. The car easily overcomes broken asphalt and dirt roads, and fast turns on the highway do not cause discomfort. The spacious rear row with armrest, cup holders and ventilation deflectors makes long trips comfortable for two adults, and when the rear seats are folded, a flat area with increased storage volume appears.

The trunk is equipped with an electric tailgate, a Harman/Kardon subwoofer, a curtain and fastening loops. Under the floor there is a full-size spare tire and an organizer with a jack. The decoration uses textures and symbols inspired by the theme of adventure, which emphasizes the car's focus on outdoor activities and travel.

However, the price of the Forester is high: the basic version with a fabric interior costs 7 million rubles, and for a premium package with a third X-Mode mode, acoustics and roof rails you will have to pay another 600 thousand. For comparison, the previous generation could be purchased for a little more than 5 million rubles.
