Autumn 1965, a testing ground near Moscow. Marshal Grechko stands before a massive eight-wheeled vehicle, weighing tens of tons. He looks at it without admiration – rather as a promising but too expensive solution to maintain. Before him is "Strela" (Arrow), a piece of equipment capable of doing what no other machine could: drive into a trench and hide underground with the headquarters inside.
The decision is brief: expensive, underdeveloped – close the project. The engineers silently put away the blueprints. The development goes into archive for almost a decade. However, the idea itself does not disappear – it cannot be canceled by a single order.
Where the task came from
To understand the meaning of such a machine, one must go back to the late 1950s. This is not about an abstract "Cold War," but about a very specific task that arose with the advent of nuclear weapons.
A stationary command post is easy to detect and destroy: it can be identified by reconnaissance, its coordinates fixed, and then struck. The solution seemed obvious – the headquarters must be mobile. Something that is constantly moving is harder to find.
But here, too, a contradiction arose. Any moving equipment remains noticeable. Therefore, the ideal command post had to not only move quickly but also disappear – literally go underground, becoming part of the landscape.
Engineers were given a task that could hardly be called ordinary. The machine had to:
- reach a given point
- hide in the ground in minimal time
- ensure autonomous operation of the headquarters
- withstand the effects of nuclear explosion factors at a certain distance
- independently leave cover and change position
This was not a theoretical exercise, but a real technical assignment with specific deadlines.
"Strela": a successful idea and an unsuccessful implementation
The first version – "Strela" – turned out to be controversial. Engineers managed to solve a number of key tasks: the sealed cabin functioned, life support systems worked, and communication was provided.
However, the main mechanism failed. While the process of "submerging" into the trench was implemented, the reverse exit from underground remained unreliable. The machine risked getting stuck, which meant the actual "burial" of the headquarters.
Added to this was the high cost. The production of such equipment with mid-1960s technology proved to be economically unfeasible. As a result, the project was closed, but not forgotten: calculations and developments were preserved.
Returning to the idea in new conditions
By the mid-1970s, the military situation had changed. High-precision weapons appeared, capable of hitting specific targets with deviations of tens of meters. Stationary objects completely lost their survivability.
Archival materials were again in demand. Over the years, technology had advanced:
- more advanced materials appeared
- component costs decreased
- mechanism reliability increased
What was previously considered raw now looked feasible. By 1978, the project received a new name – "Redut".
Design and characteristics
The basis for "Redut" was the MAZ-543V chassis – a proven platform used for various military tasks.
The machine had the following features:
- 8x8 wheel formula
- D12A-525A diesel engine with 525 hp
- weight around 40 tons
- maximum speed up to 60 km/h
- length about 11.5 meters
- ground clearance of 440 mm, allowing it to overcome difficult terrain
The vehicle could ford water up to a meter deep and climb slopes with an incline of up to 30 degrees. Fuel consumption was approximately 80 liters per 100 km – a figure that was not considered critical in this case.
Inside was a sealed command post. The exact composition of the equipment remains classified, but it is known that it ensured the full operation of a group of officers and control systems.
How "Redut" disappeared
The machine's deployment looked like this: special equipment would prepare a trench in advance. The "Redut" would drive inside along guides, after which it would be covered with soil. Only minimal elements remained outside – observation windows and an air duct.
As a result, the machine became indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain. It was extremely difficult to detect, regardless of the observation method.
The main difference from "Strela" was the ability to exit independently. If necessary, the "Redut" would emerge from underground, using its full engine power, and leave its position.
Nevertheless, dependence on auxiliary equipment remained: without an excavator, the machine could not hide. This limitation required coordination and time, which could become a vulnerability in combat conditions.
The fate of the machine
"Redut" was adopted and became part of the large family of MAZ-543-based equipment, numbering over sixty modifications. Among them were missile systems, transporters, and specialized installations.
The machine was last shown publicly in 1987. After that, it was transported to the Nikolo-Uryupino area, where a military equipment museum was planned. The "Redut" reached there under its own power.
However, the museum never materialized. The machine remained outdoors.
The story of "Redut" is an example of how an idea, once deemed untimely, can return and find new embodiment.
A machine capable of disappearing underground became a reality thanks to a combination of engineering persistence and changed conditions. But its fate also shows something else: even the most unusual developments can be forgotten if they are not taken care of.
