In late 1972, serial production of the VAZ-2103 began in the USSR – a car that quickly became the dream of millions. In the 1970s, it was perceived not just as a means of transport, but as a status symbol and a peculiar sign of success. Owning such a car meant that its owner stood out from the rest.
The model's appearance – a streamlined silhouette, four round headlights, features of a European sedan – looked significantly more modern than "Zaporozhets" and "Moskvich" cars. This made the "troika" a visual embodiment of progress and prosperity.
Role in Soviet Cinema
It was precisely because of its status that the VAZ-2103 often appeared on screen. In cinema, it performed a clear function – showing the hero's position in a single shot.
The car can be seen in a number of famous films:
- "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" – Ippolit owns the car
- "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" – Katerina receives it after becoming a factory director
- "Unbelievable Adventures of Italians in Russia" – the heroine Olga rents a bright red VAZ-2103 (license plate 09-72 TUR)
In these films, the car acted not just as a prop, but as an element of the atmosphere. It emphasized the characters' standard of living and created a sense of modernity. This is especially noticeable in the film about Italians: against the backdrop of familiar European cars, the "troika" looked confident and relevant, demonstrating the capabilities of the Soviet automotive industry.
From Turin to Tolyatti
The model's history begins with the cooperation between the USSR and the Fiat concern. A general agreement was signed on August 8, 1966, in Moscow and included the supply of equipment, technologies, and a loan for the construction of the plant.
The construction of the enterprise in Tolyatti took almost four years and required about 5 billion rubles. At the same time:
- some equipment was purchased in CMEA countries
- a significant portion of equipment was supplied from Italy, West Germany, France, Great Britain, and the USA
- production was planned to be localized as much as possible
This project proved beneficial to both sides: the USSR received modern production, and Fiat received a large contract during a period of internal difficulties.
Evolution from Fiat to VAZ
The Fiat 124 served as the basis, but it was significantly redesigned before serial production. A total of about 800 changes were made.
Key improvements included:
- reinforced body
- new engine with overhead camshaft
- modernized gearbox and clutch
- redesigned suspension and increased ground clearance
- rear drum brakes instead of disc brakes
As a result, VAZ cars became better adapted to operating conditions in the USSR.
Design and Character of the "Troika"
The VAZ-2103 was not just an evolution of the "kopeyka" (VAZ-2101), but an independent model with a higher level of execution. Despite retaining about 80% unification with the VAZ-2101, the car received its own appearance.
Its distinctive features:
- four round headlights
- expressive radiator grille
- smooth body lines
- chrome side moldings, visually lengthening the silhouette
Even technologically complex elements, such as the precise alignment of molding lines, were flawlessly implemented, which emphasized the high level of execution.
The VAZ-2103 became more than just a car. Its significance was determined by several factors at once:
- status and prestige in everyday life
- recognizable image in cinema
- technological base created in cooperation with Fiat
- thoughtful design and adaptation to USSR conditions
Ultimately, the "troika" became a symbol of its era – a car that combined technical progress and cultural significance, remaining in memory as one of the brightest images of the Soviet automotive industry.
