Chinese cars are increasingly common on Russian roads, but experts recommend that owners of such vehicles pay special attention to protecting the body from corrosion. In some manufacturing processes, anti-corrosion treatment may be insufficient, so additional prevention helps reduce the risk of rust. It is important not only to protect the car in advance but also to know how to act at the first signs of corrosion.
What measures will help prevent rust
Body protection should ideally be considered at the initial stage of car operation. Before carrying out work, it is recommended to study the features of a specific model, as the level of factory anti-corrosion treatment may vary. Budget cars often have only certain body elements protected. As an example, experts cite some Changan, Omoda, and Chery Tiggo 4 models.
Additional treatment of several of the most vulnerable areas is considered the most effective:
- underbody – mastic or polymer coatings are used for it, which protect the metal from moisture, road reagents, and simultaneously improve sound insulation;
- wheel arches – anti-gravel coating is recommended here, which reduces damage from sand, gravel, and small stones;
- hidden cavities – internal parts of doors, sills, pillars, and spars. Wax- or oil-based compounds are suitable for these areas, displacing moisture from hard-to-reach places, seams, and joints.
Before applying protective materials, the car must be thoroughly prepared. First, the body is washed with a high-pressure washer using a shampoo that removes salt deposits, after which the surfaces are completely dried.
It is also recommended to install mudguards and wheel arch liners. They reduce the abrasive effect of sand and stones on sills, bumpers, and other body elements.
It is equally important to monitor the condition of drainage holes in doors and sills. If they become clogged, water begins to accumulate inside, which contributes to the development of internal corrosion. Such damage is considered more dangerous than rust visible from the outside.
The demand for Chinese cars in Russia continues to grow, but questions related to the corrosion resistance of some models remain. For this reason, experts advise taking care of additional protection for a new car immediately after purchase to avoid serious problems in the future.
What needs to be done during operation
Even after anti-corrosion treatment, the body requires regular monitoring. Owners are advised to periodically inspect the most vulnerable areas where the first signs of rust most often appear.
Special attention should be paid to:
- wheel arches;
- sills;
- lower door edges;
- welds under the hood and in the trunk;
- body panel joints.
Experts advise not to delay eliminating even minor damage to the paintwork. Scratches and chips become places through which moisture begins to affect the metal.
If damage has already appeared, the area must be cleaned to bare metal, then treated with a rust converter. Orthophosphoric acid-based compounds are considered the most effective. Then the surface is recommended to be covered with an epoxy primer, which has good anti-corrosion properties. The use of ordinary acrylic primer without special protective components does not provide long-term metal protection.
In winter, experts advise washing the car more often. Road reagents, salt, and dirt must be removed as quickly as possible, as their combination with high humidity and temperature changes significantly accelerates the development of corrosion. The underbody and hidden cavities of the body should be washed especially thoroughly.
After washing, it is recommended to additionally use protective coatings:
- car wax;
- ceramic compounds.
An additional measure of protection can be covering the body with a polyurethane protective film. It reduces the likelihood of scratches and chips, and thanks to its water-repellent properties, it prevents the accumulation of moisture and dirt on the body surface.
At the same time, experts remind that anti-corrosion protection must be periodically updated. Even with high-quality factory treatment, it is recommended to reapply protective compounds before the winter season or perform a full treatment once every two to three years.
What to do when the first signs of corrosion appear
If rust has already appeared on the body, repairs cannot be delayed. The damaged area must be cleaned of corrosion products as quickly as possible, treated with a special compound, and then the paintwork restored.
As experts note, if the development of corrosion is not stopped in time, it will quickly spread to adjacent metal areas. As a result, the damage can become irreversible, and the cost of repairs will significantly increase.
Ultimately, additional anti-corrosion protection for many Chinese cars remains one of the most effective preventive measures. It is equally important to regularly inspect the body, promptly eliminate scratches and chips, and react to the first signs of rust. This approach significantly extends the service life of the body and avoids serious costs for restorative repairs.
