Prices to Jump by 40%: Russian Automakers Ask to Block Import of Foreign Cars

The increased utilization fee will cause the cost increase

Major Russian automakers, including GAZ, KamAZ, and Sollers, have appealed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to revise the principles for calculating the utilization fee.

They proposed moving away from linking it to engine displacement, replacing it with a power indicator, and tightening the conditions for importing foreign-made cars by individuals.

According to the auto concerns, the current mechanism for calculating the fee does not correspond to modern realities. In particular, modern engines, including hybrid and turbocharged ones, demonstrate significant power even with a small displacement, which contributes to the development of "gray" import schemes and makes the rate system unfair to different models.

Market analysts have suggested that switching to calculating the utilization fee based on power could lead to an increase in the cost of imported cars by an average of 15-40%, and for some models, the increase could amount to millions of rubles.
