Toyota Prepares New V8 Engine for SUVs and Sports Cars

Modular engine may appear not only on supercars, but also on Land Cruiser

Toyota is developing a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, and it has now become known that it may be installed not only on sports models. Takashi Uehara, head of the company's powertrain division, said in an interview with Drive that the design of the new V8 allows it to be used even in cars such as the Land Cruiser 300.

The engineer noted that the engine is based on a modular architecture, similar to the new series of 2.0-liter G20E engines, which are already being tested on the GR Yaris M prototype. This unification opens the way for the installation of the V8 in various models, including SUVs and luxury sedans.

According to GoAuto, the new engine is a combination of two four-cylinder blocks and is capable of being combined with a hybrid system. It is expected to debut in the production Lexus Sport coupe, and later appear on the Toyota GR GT, which is scheduled to premiere on December 4. The possibility of installing it in the Century brand model is also being considered, which emphasizes Toyota's desire to maintain powerful internal combustion engines in the era of electrification.
