Tough Vehicle Inspection Controls to Return in Russia via Street Cameras

State Duma Moves to Suppress Operation of Defective Vehicles

The Russian Association of Motor Insurers (RAMI) has proposed connecting street cameras to automatically check vehicle inspection compliance. The initiative was announced at an offsite meeting of the State Duma Committee on Transport.

The system should work by recognizing license plates — cameras will cross-reference the vehicle with the database of the Unified Automated Vehicle Inspection System. RAMI notes that only a few vehicles undergo inspection today, but regular monitoring is necessary for road safety.

Sergey Yefremov, Director of Asset Protection at RAMI, emphasized that the gap in control leads to the operation of vehicles in disrepair. According to him, the integration of cameras is the most effective way to return vehicle inspection to a real mode.

Their cars are usually older than ten years. Mandatory regular technical condition control is simply necessary for them. But in fact, few people pass it.

RAMI clarified that EAISTO, like the "Pautina" system, is within the area of responsibility of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This simplifies data exchange and allows for quick setup of interaction between departments. As a result, the procedure can work without a large-scale restructuring of the infrastructure.
