Car enthusiasts have nothing to fear: talks about banning the registration of old cars turned out to be a dud

The State Traffic Inspectorate dotted the i's and refuted rumors about restrictions for vintage cars

Reports circulated online that from 2026, owners of old cars could allegedly be prohibited from re-registering their cars if they do not meet modern standards. The idea was explained by the desire to accelerate the renewal of the car fleet, which is noticeably aging in the country: the average age of cars has reached 19 years, and the cost of new models makes them inaccessible to most. Against the backdrop of these conversations, some experts have already painted gloomy prospects for millions of car owners.

However, the State Traffic Inspectorate gave an unambiguous answer: no age restrictions are being introduced. The department emphasized that the period of operation is not a basis for refusing registration actions. The only criterion is the technical condition of the car, confirmed by technical inspection. Changes in legislation regarding tightening the rules for old cars are not being considered.

In fact, the idea, first voiced by dealers against the backdrop of a desire to increase sales of new cars, has no chance of being realized. At current prices, it is impossible to update the fleet, and a ban on registration would hit a huge number of Russians. Old cars will continue to be registered without restrictions, and any talk of upcoming bans remains just speculation.
