Toyota prepares to exceed 10 million vehicles per year

Partly due to increased demand for hybrids

Toyota Motor has formed plans to increase global car production to over 10 million units in 2026. According to Nikkei, this includes all brands in the group, including Lexus. The main driver of growth is said to be high demand for hybrid models, primarily in the US market.

It is expected that Toyota will be able to maintain annual production above 10 million vehicles for the second year in a row. At the same time, production volumes within Japan are projected to exceed 3 million cars. The company has already begun to notify key suppliers of auto components in advance about the planned increase in production.

Toyota believes that there are currently no serious factors that could lead to a decrease in production. In the past, the concern faced a shortage of automotive semiconductors, as well as certification problems related to the "type approval" procedure required for mass production of models. These difficulties appear to be behind us.

From January to November 2025, Toyota's total global production reached 9.17 million vehicles, which is approximately 5% more compared to the same period last year. If current rates are maintained, the final figure for the entire year of 2025 may approach 10 million vehicles.

Toyota also estimates customs costs in fiscal year 2025, which will end in March 2026, at 1.45 trillion yen. This amount includes costs that partially fall on component suppliers. Despite the stated course towards expanding local production, the automaker does not yet plan to make any drastic changes to its production system in the short term.
