Unified Modular Platform Project for Cars Abandoned in Russia

Development suspended due to budget constraints

The development of a unified modular platform (EMP) for cars has been suspended in Russia. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Anton Alikhanov, speaking in the State Duma.

According to the minister, the decision is of a forced nature and is related to the current budget constraints. In the current environment, the department intends to reallocate resources and focus on localizing the production of critical components.

Due to budget constraints, we were forced to abandon the capital-intensive project of developing a unified modular platform for the time being. Without government support, our manufacturers will unfortunately not be able to handle such costs now.
Anton Alikhanov, Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation

Instead of a unified modular platform, the priority will be the development of a local component base, primarily for the segment of electric vehicles and hybrids. According to the results of last year, 15 thousand such cars were produced in Russia, which is three times more than the previous year's figure.

In 2024, it was planned to allocate 160 billion rubles for the creation of the EMP. Funding was supposed to be carried out in stages over the next five years. AvtoVAZ, GAZ and KamAZ were planned to be involved in the project, and FSUE NAMI was the main developer of the platform.
