Toyota Changes Its Legendary Quality Standards

Company Launches Smart Standard Activity Program to Reduce Costs

Toyota will reduce requirements for some components: the company is launching a cost optimization program.

Company head Koji Sato stated at a meeting with suppliers that the automaker is forced to adapt to current conditions and cut costs.

Previously, Toyota adhered to extremely strict quality standards. Even minimal defects, unnoticeable without magnification, led to the rejection of parts. For example, about 10,000 wiring harnesses were disposed of monthly due to the non-ideal shade of insulation.

Also, suppliers wrote off ceiling panels with barely noticeable spots and steering wheels with minimal leather defects. This led to significant losses.

Purchasing manager Seiji Nishihara noted that most of these shortcomings do not affect customers' perception of cars.

Now the company is launching the Smart Standard Activity program. Its goal is to revise the requirements for elements that do not affect safety and functionality, and to reduce production costs.
