Methanol cars may weigh half as much as electric cars, Geely CEO Li Shufu said at a forum in China in 2026. According to him, lithium-ion electric vehicles are inferior in terms of energy intensity. Methanol, Li noted, provides more than a tenfold advantage in this indicator. This makes it possible to create vehicles with comparable efficiency at a lower weight.
He emphasized that the heavy weight of electric vehicles increases energy consumption, especially in commercial transport. At the same time, electric vehicles have already become widespread in China.
The company has been betting on methanol for more than 20 years. Pilot projects have been implemented in the country since 2012, and state support has been in place since 2019. Currently, more than 39 cities have introduced measures to develop such cars.
Geely is already integrating the technology into production models and motorsport. In particular, a hybrid based on the Galaxy Starshine 6 with a methanol engine has been presented, but methanol solutions are primarily considered for freight transport.
