Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia announced a partnership with CATL to produce batteries for hybrid vehicles. Production is aimed at both the domestic market and export. Overseas deliveries will begin in the second half of 2026 and will include both finished battery packs and components.
The investment in the project amounts to $75.8 million (5.8 billion rubles). Production will cover the full cycle – from raw materials to finished batteries. TMMIN President Director Nandi Juliantho confirmed that currently, cells and modules are imported but will be localized.
Today, the Karawang plant already has a battery assembly line for the Kijang Innova Zenix HEV, Veloz HEV, and Yaris Cross HEV models. The new cooperation will allow a transition from assembly to cell and module production. The localization level could increase from 8% to 80%.
The project strengthens Indonesia's role in Toyota's supply chain. It aligns with the company's strategy, which includes hybrids, electric vehicles, and hydrogen models. In 2025, the market for electrified vehicles in the country grew to 177,367 units (+71%), of which 76.5% were hybrids.
Earlier, motoram.ru reported on CATL's development of a battery that charges to 98% in 6.5 minutes.
