BYD has launched one of the most ambitious tests of its new charging infrastructure. The company sent BYD Song Ultra EV crossovers on a 4244 km journey through six provinces of China — from highways to desert areas and rural roads. The main task is to show that electric vehicles are no longer tied to the city.
The route runs along the G30 Lianhuo Expressway, where BYD has already provided full coverage with its Flash Charging network. In the last week, the company added another 55 stations, bringing the total number to 5979 charging points in 312 cities in China. The number of users of the proprietary application has exceeded one million people.
The main advantage of the system is speed. BYD claims that the Song Ultra EV is capable of getting a "useful charge" in five minutes, and an almost full charge in about nine minutes. This uses a 1000-volt architecture and charging stations with a power of up to 1500 kW — this is several times higher than most modern European networks.
The Song Ultra EV itself has become one of BYD's most successful launches in 2026. The electric SUV with a range of up to 710 km CLTC collected more than 61 thousand orders in just a month after the start of sales. Moreover, about 70% of buyers chose the long-range version.
But the rapid growth has already had consequences. Against the backdrop of sharp demand, BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu admitted a shortage of batteries: battery production is not keeping up with the expansion of the model range and the launch of new cars with Flash Charging.
This is an important signal for the industry. Chinese companies are now competing not only with cars, but also with their own infrastructure — following the Tesla model, but on a much more aggressive scale.
