Chinese BYD unexpectedly entered the ultra-luxury segment: Denza sold for more than Rolls-Royce

The special version of the Z9 GT Chopard Edition was sold at auction for 58 million rubles

BYD has taken another unexpected step towards the ultra-luxury segment. A special version of the Denza Z9 GT Chopard Edition was sold in China for 5.88 million yuan — approximately 58 million rubles. This is the most expensive car in Denza's history. The model was created in collaboration with the Swiss jewelry house Chopard and effectively demonstrated how far Chinese brands are willing to go in the premium segment. The car received unique body trim, an exclusive interior, and a set of jewelry accessories.

But the main thing here is not even the price, but the platform itself. The Denza Z9 GT is built on BYD's new e3 architecture with a three-motor powertrain producing over 950 hp. The car supports independent rear-wheel steering, "tank turn" capability, and an advanced high-speed stabilization system.

It is interesting that just a few years ago, Chinese brands were primarily associated with affordable cars. Now BYD is actually trying to compete not only with Tesla or BMW, but with Bentley, Porsche, and Rolls-Royce — and not through price, but through exclusivity and technology.

The format of the car itself is particularly indicative. The Z9 GT is not an SUV, but a large luxury shooting brake with an emphasis on design, digital technologies, and performance. Chinese companies are increasingly moving away from copying Western models and beginning to form their own style of premium car.
