BYD's New Flagship Learned to Drift Driverless: Denza Z9 Showcased Its Electronics Capabilities

The car independently avoids obstacles, goes into a controlled skid, and maintains control even after a tire puncture

The premium brand Denza, part of BYD, demonstrated the unusual capabilities of its flagship sedan, the Z9. During tests, the car performed a series of complex maneuvers with minimal human intervention, including automatic obstacle avoidance and controlled skidding at high speed.

The main star of the demonstration was the e³ intelligent platform. It integrates three electric motors, a rear-wheel steering system, and a high-speed computing complex that controls the powertrain and chassis in real time. This allows the car to independently regulate traction on each wheel.

The most impressive episode was the so-called autonomous drift. During tests, the electronics independently initiated a skid, controlled the slip angle, and returned the car to the specified trajectory without driver intervention. Such capabilities are usually used not for entertainment, but to improve stability in emergency situations on slippery surfaces.

Another test involved driving at high speed after a tire puncture. The system redistributed traction between the wheels and corrected the trajectory, allowing the car to maintain control. Manufacturers consider such functions one of the key directions for the development of modern active safety systems.

For BYD, this demonstration is as important as the launch of a new model. Chinese manufacturers are increasingly competing not on range or power, but on software capabilities. And the Denza Z9 shows how quickly cars are turning into computers on wheels, capable of independently performing complex dynamic maneuvers.
