The Swedish company Koenigsegg is known not only for speed records and hypercars worth millions of dollars. In recent years, the brand's engineers have created several technologies that have revolutionized traditional ideas about car design.
One of the most unusual solutions was the Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) system. Instead of a traditional gearbox, the Regera hypercar uses a fixed gear in combination with electric motors. This allowed for reduced power losses and lower transmission weight, while maintaining impressive dynamics.
Freevalve technology is considered no less revolutionary. Such an engine operates without camshafts: each valve is controlled individually using an electro-pneumatic system. As a result, the engine gains more precise control over the combustion process and can become more economical and powerful than traditional counterparts. Later, this development formed the basis of the three-cylinder TFG engine for the Gemera model.
Other inventions of the company include the Light Speed Transmission, capable of instant gear changes, the proprietary Dihedral Synchro-Helix doors with a unique opening trajectory, and the active use of 3D printing in the production of complex components.
Many Koenigsegg innovations are created in-house. For a relatively small manufacturer, this is a rarity: the brand independently develops engines, transmissions, software, and key structural elements.
Today, the solutions of the Swedish brand remain the prerogative of exclusive hypercars. However, history shows that it is precisely such experimental technologies that often become the basis for future production cars.
