Porsche CEO Michael Leiters officially confirmed that the company continues to develop the all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman family. This statement put an end to numerous rumors about the possible cancellation of the project, which were actively discussed in recent months.
According to Leiters, the decision was made primarily from an economic point of view.
With the electric 718, we came to the conclusion that we will produce this model, as it is the best solution from an economic point of view, and it will be a fantastic car.
At the same time, the head of the company deliberately did not comment on the prospects of the gasoline version of the 718. This very question remains the main source of uncertainty surrounding the future of the model.
Over the past year, the concept of the new 718 has changed several times. Initially, Porsche planned to completely switch the Boxster and Cayman to electric traction. Then there were reports of parallel development of electric and gasoline modifications. Later, a number of media outlets reported that the company was exploring the possibility of adapting the new platform for an internal combustion engine, but official confirmation of this information never followed.
Currently, it is only known that the electric 718 is being created on a new architecture, which, according to foreign publications, will also form the basis for the future Audi TT with an electric powertrain.
