Volvo is launching the Safety Coach application, which evaluates driver behavior behind the wheel and provides recommendations for safer driving. The system analyzes acceleration, braking, cornering, and speed, then forms a personal rating – the Safety Coach Score.
Unlike conventional telematics systems, the goal of Safety Coach is not to assess driving efficiency, but to identify the potential risk of an accident. For example, harsh braking and acceleration or excessive speed can worsen the final score. The algorithm was developed by Volvo in collaboration with Cambridge Mobile Telematics.
The pilot launch began in Sweden and Norway. The application is available for most Volvos starting from the 2020 model year, equipped with an infotainment system based on Google Android. Volvo later plans to launch Safety Coach in the USA and other European countries.
In Sweden and Norway, owners will be offered to share information about their driving style with the Volvia insurance company. Based on this data, they can receive a personalized insurance offer with a potentially lower cost.
Participation is voluntary: separate consent is required for using Safety Coach and separate permission to transfer data to the insurer.
