Toyota is betting on alternative fuels where long journeys and towing are important

Toyota has confirmed the launch of the Hilux FCEV with a hydrogen powertrain in 2028. The pickup will receive fuel cells that generate electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, with water being the only reaction product emitted from the exhaust.

Against the backdrop of the already presented Hilux BEV, the difference is particularly noticeable. The battery-powered version uses a 59.2 kWh battery, has a range of up to 257 km according to WLTP, and is designed to tow a trailer weighing up to 1.6 tons.

For the hydrogen Hilux, Toyota has so far only revealed target figures: over 400 km of WLTP range and up to 2.5 tons of towing capacity. This should make the FCEV more suitable for long routes and working with a trailer.

The technology has already been tested on Hilux prototypes. Previously, Toyota used Mirai fuel cells and three hydrogen tanks placed inside the ladder frame chassis. Now the company is preparing a production vehicle.

It is noteworthy that Toyota is simultaneously developing hydrogen technologies for heavy transport: the new generation of fuel cells has twice the power and twice the lifespan compared to the previous system.
