Despite the abundance of surveillance cameras and various protection systems, car thefts cannot be completely avoided. In 2025, such crimes also took place, but there are no accurate official statistics on them: the Ministry of Internal Affairs rarely publishes such data. The largest insurance companies revealed which cars most often became the favorites of car thieves, whether there are Chinese brands among them, and which regions turned out to be the most dangerous.
According to VSK data, Kia became the leader in the frequency of thefts in 2025: its cars accounted for 21% of all thefts. The second place was taken by the Russian Lada with 14%. Next in the "black list" were Lexus, Chery, Li Auto, Hyundai, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. Among individual models, Kia Stinger was the most popular among criminals - it accounted for 14% of all thefts according to the company.
In Zetta Insurance, Korean cars also became leaders, but Hyundai models were put in first place. Other details of the anti-rating in this company were not disclosed. In the insurance company Soglasie, the top three most stolen cars looked different: JAC, Nissan and Lada (VAZ). And in RESO-Guarantee, Toyota received the championship in thefts, followed by Lexus and Skoda, then Hyundai and Lada.
As for Chinese brands, VSK representatives noted an increase in their share in the overall structure of thefts to 21%. Chery and Li Auto models were at risk. On the contrary, Soglasie recorded a decrease in the number of insurance cases with Chinese cars, and the preferences of car thieves also changed: if in 2024 Omoda and Exeed were more often stolen, then in 2025 the attention of thieves switched to JAC.
RESO-Guarantee clarified that the interest of criminals is mainly focused on Chinese models of the mass segment. Geely and Chery cars are especially often stolen, usually for dismantling for spare parts. Thus, despite the relatively low prices, such cars remain in demand among criminals.
From the point of view of the geography of thefts, Moscow topped the anti-rating according to VSK: the capital accounted for 35% of all cases. St. Petersburg was in second place with 23%. Also on the "black list" were the Amur, Voronezh, Dagestan, Tatarstan and Ryazan regions. RESO-Guarantee also noted adjacent territories and parking lots of shopping centers as the main places of theft.
Analysts at Zetta Insurance confirmed Moscow's leadership, and also included the Yaroslavl region and Tatarstan in the top three dangerous regions. Soglasie added St. Petersburg, Kazan and Stavropol to its list. Thus, car thieves mainly focus on large cities and densely populated regions with a high concentration of cars.
Experts warn: there is no complete protection against theft. Valery Sambul, Commercial Director of Cerber-M, advises additionally installing mechanical locks on the gearbox, steering shaft and even the brake pedal. A comprehensive protection system, including hidden installation, reduces the risk of theft and increases vehicle safety.
