The Mazda RX-7, which appeared in 1978, immediately stood out from its competitors thanks to its Wankel rotary engine. Unlike classic piston engines, it used a rotating triangular rotor operating in a special chamber. This design provided compactness, low weight, and high output with a small displacement.
Over three generations, produced until 2002, the model was consistently improved. The most striking embodiment was the RX-7 FD3S: the 13B-REW engine developed up to 280 hp, and the car's weight was only slightly over one ton. Features of the rotary engine
The Wankel design gave the RX-7 a number of significant advantages:

- high specific power: 1.3 liters provided up to 280 hp

However, the technology also had significant drawbacks:

- significant fuel consumption — about 12–15 liters per 100 km
- difficulty in meeting environmental standards
Reasons for market withdrawal
Production of the RX-7 ended in 2002. Key factors included:
- stricter environmental requirements, which the rotary engine struggled to meet
- high cost and complexity of maintenance
- the need for significant design rework, requiring large expenditures
As a result, Mazda chose to abandon further development of the model in its previous form.
Return of the idea
Although the RX-7 disappeared from the assembly line, the concept itself was not forgotten. In 2023, the company introduced the MX-30 R-EV, where the rotary engine is now used as a generator to recharge the battery. It is no longer the primary propulsion, but it has retained its place in the brand's engineering philosophy.
Legacy and value
Today, the RX-7, especially the FD3S version, remains in demand among collectors. In the Russian market, its cost varies from approximately 2.5 to 4 million rubles. Owners are willing to invest significant funds in maintenance and restoration, viewing the car as part of technical heritage.
The Mazda RX-7 left the market not due to a lack of interest, but due to objective limitations. Its history is based on several key factors:
