Legendary VAZ-2106: The Main Hit of the Soviet Automotive Industry

The "Shestyorka" combined prestige, comfort, and good dynamics, which kept it popular even decades later

The automotive industry of the USSR evoked contradictory feelings among citizens. On the one hand, Soviet factories produced cars that were popular. On the other hand, acquiring a personal car was extremely difficult. Even if a person had money, it did not guarantee a quick purchase. One had to wait, look for options, and literally fight to get in line.

Nevertheless, cars were actively bought in the country. And people were happy with almost any model – even the famous ZAZ-968 "Zaporozhets," which later became the subject of many jokes. But other cars were especially highly valued – those that were considered prestigious and were in high demand among Soviet motorists.

In the second half of the 1970s, one of the main favorites was the VAZ-2106. Production of this model at the Volga Automobile Plant began in 1976.

The "Shestyorka" became the fourth model in the classic VAZ family. The car was produced in a sedan body and was designed for five people. By the standards of its time, the car looked very solid and even luxurious.

The perception of the car was significantly influenced by design details:

  • a large number of chrome elements
  • effective body trim
  • plastic interior trim
  • a neat and modern interior

All this created the impression of a more expensive and prestigious car.

However, the popularity of the VAZ-2106 was not only due to its appearance. The technical characteristics for the late 1970s also looked quite decent. Under the hood, a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 77 horsepower was installed.

For a Soviet mass-produced car, the figures were quite serious:

  • acceleration to 100 km/h took about 16 seconds
  • the maximum speed reached 155 km/h

In terms of dynamics, the "Shestyorka" surpassed many domestic cars of that period.

Owners especially appreciated the comfort. The car received a soft suspension, which ensured a smooth ride even on imperfect roads. In combination with comfortable seats, this made trips quite comfortable for both the driver and passengers.

Interestingly, the VAZ-2106 was considered more prestigious than even the Lada Niva, despite the SUV being structurally more complex. The price of the "Shestyorka" remained higher, and the car itself was perceived as a more status-oriented option for urban use.

The model's popularity proved so high that it persisted for decades. Cars were sold not only within the Soviet Union but were also actively exported. The VAZ-2106 was supplied to many countries, and some examples can still be found outside the former USSR.

In Russia, these cars also continue to appear on the roads. Moreover, some cars have been preserved in very good technical condition, despite their considerable age.

Production of the VAZ-2106 ended only in 2006. For a model that appeared in the mid-1970s, this was a truly rare case of automotive longevity. In many ways, this is why the "Shestyorka" still remains one of the most recognizable and popular cars of the Soviet era.
