A small chip on the car body does not always mean that the part will have to be completely repainted. In many cases, the damage can be repaired locally. However, such a repair requires an accurate assessment of the coating's condition: an error at this stage can lead to rust, a noticeable repair boundary, or premature destruction of the new paint layer.
First, we determine how deep the damaged area is
The appearance of a chip does not always immediately reveal how seriously the coating is damaged. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to determine which layer has been compromised.
If only the top layer is damaged and the primer is not affected, it is usually sufficient to locally prepare the surface and restore the coating. It is important to remove the weak and damaged edge of the chip, but not to enlarge the repair area unnecessarily.
If the damage has reached the primer and it has become visible, its condition must be assessed. When the primer holds firmly, there are no signs of corrosion underneath, and the coating itself is not peeling, further repairs can be carried out on this stable base.
Special attention should be paid to the defect boundary. A sharp drop must be gradually smoothed into a gentle transition. If a sharp step is left, it may become visible after painting and make the repair area noticeable.
The most problematic option is a chip down to the metal. The exposed area must be thoroughly cleaned and protected. If rust has already appeared nearby, it is not enough to treat only the central point of the damage. It is necessary to remove all unstable parts of the coating and eliminate corrosion within the damaged area.
When assessing a chip, it is especially important to check three points:
- how deep the coating is damaged;
- what condition the primer is in and whether there are signs of corrosion;
- how stable the edges of the damaged area are.
Properly preparing the surface
Even a small chip can be ruined by improper preparation. One common mistake is to immediately use too fine an abrasive and try to smooth out the defect only from the surface.
It is much more correct to gradually reduce the grit of the abrasive: first P240, then P320, and after that P400/P500. This sequence allows for consistently removing deeper scratches left after the previous stage and forming a smooth transition between the repaired area and the undamaged coating.
After sanding is complete, it is not enough to just look at the surface. It is advisable to additionally check it by hand. The transition should be as smooth as possible, and the sharp edge of the chip should be almost imperceptible to the touch.
The quality of preparation largely determines how inconspicuous the local repair will be after painting.
When is it better to repaint the entire part?
Local restoration is not always the optimal solution. Sometimes, a full repaint of the part allows for a more predictable result and avoids a noticeable transition.
This option is especially justified when:
- there are several chips on one part, located at a significant distance from each other;
- the car has a complex color – metallic, pearl, or a three-layer system;
- the boundary of the local transition could potentially be noticeable after repair;
- a significant area of the part is affected by the damage.
Trying to limit oneself to local repairs at all costs does not always truly save money. If the condition of the coating is incorrectly assessed or an unsuitable restoration method is chosen, a more complex rework may be required later.
Therefore, the main thing when repairing a chip is not its size, but the condition of all damaged layers and the ability to create an inconspicuous transition. If the base is stable, the area is small, and the preparation is done correctly, a full repaint of the part may indeed be unnecessary.
