The Australian Automobile Association tested five electric vehicles to see if the actual range matched the manufacturer's claim. The test included BYD Atto 3, Tesla Model 3, Smart #3, Kia EV6, and Tesla Model Y. The test was conducted on a 93-kilometer route near Geelong, Australia.
As a result of the tests, BYD showed the maximum difference between the claimed and actual range, driving only 369 km instead of the claimed 480 (23% behind the manufacturer's claimed range). Tesla Model 3 came in 2nd place, with a 14% difference in results. Kia and Tesla Model Y shared the third honorable place, with a range difference of 8%. Smart #3 was the winner with a 5% difference.
Such a discrepancy in results is frustrating not so much by the fact of overstating the claimed mileage for marketing purposes, but by the fact that even within the same manufacturer, using Tesla as an example, it is impossible to understand how much the result is overstated and what real mileage a potential buyer can expect.
