Stellantis is ceasing the development of the all-electric Ram 1500 pickup truck, citing a slowdown in demand for large electric vehicles in North America. A company representative stated that this decision is due to a reassessment of the product strategy. The project, which was intended to be part of the battery-electric vehicle lineup, is now canceled, reflecting a broader trend among U.S. automakers to scale back their EV plans.
In recent months, American companies have been revising their EV strategies amid reduced federal support for battery-powered models. Full-size electric pickup trucks have proven to be a particularly challenging segment, with sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck falling short of expectations. Pickup truck drivers prefer gasoline versions due to concerns about range and towing capabilities in electric vehicles.
The Ram 1500 project had already faced delays: last year, former CEO Carlos Tavares decided to postpone it to improve quality. In May, Stellantis appointed a new head, Antonio Filosa. The company will also rename the extended-range pickup, previously known as the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, to Ram 1500 REV.
