Authorities Discuss Introducing Unusual License Plates

Green license plates for electric cars, and turquoise ones for unmanned vehicles

The National Automobile Union has proposed introducing separate colors for state license plates for electric vehicles and unmanned cars in Russia. According to TASS, the Vice President of the NAS, Anton Shaparin, stated that a corresponding letter has been sent to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin.

According to the initiative, it is proposed to designate electric vehicles with green license plates, and unmanned vehicles with turquoise ones. To this end, the NAS proposes amending the law on vehicle registration. According to Shaparin, visual identification of such vehicles is necessary both for other road users and for law enforcement.

Road users, ordinary motorists, will understand that an automated road user is driving nearby, one that complies with traffic rules, that sees the 60 [km/h] sign and drives at 60 [km/h], and not 80 [km/h] like ordinary drivers. If one of the drivers drives like that, they are usually cut off afterwards, believing that they are slowing everyone down.

A separate color for license plates for electric vehicles, according to the union, will simplify monitoring the provision of existing benefits, including free parking and preferences when paying for travel on toll roads. This will allow faster identification of such vehicles without additional checks.

Turquoise license plates for unmanned vehicles, as Shaparin explained, will increase the safety and transparency of their operation. Other drivers should understand that a highly automated vehicle is moving nearby, and it is important for the state to establish a mechanism for its visual identification in advance.
