Auto Giants Seek New Uses for Batteries Amid Falling Demand

Global electric vehicle sales in February were 11% lower than last year

Global sales of electric vehicles in February amounted to about 1.1 million cars, but demand has begun to decline. According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, the figure was 11% lower compared to the same month last year and also 11% less than January's result.

The market situation differs by region. In Europe, electric vehicle sales continue to grow: since the beginning of the year, they have increased by 21%. The most significant growth was recorded in Germany (+26%) and France (+30%). In Italy, the market almost doubled thanks to government subsidies and support programs.

The situation is different in the USA. Despite an 8% increase in sales in February, total figures since the beginning of the year have decreased by 36%. Ford has seen a particularly noticeable drop, with electric vehicle sales down by approximately 70%.

The largest electric vehicle market, China, is showing mixed dynamics. Domestic sales fell by 26% after the reinstatement of the purchase tax and changes to car exchange programs. At the same time, Chinese manufacturers sharply increased exports: in the first two months of 2026, shipments abroad exceeded 500,000 vehicles.

Amid fluctuating demand, automakers have begun to more actively use batteries not only for cars, but also for energy storage systems. For example, Volkswagen launched a large energy storage system at its plant in Salzgitter, Germany. The facility, with a capacity of about 20 MW and a capacity of 40 MW·h, helps store excess electricity and stabilize power grids.
