The Legendary Nissan GT-R Returns in a Hybrid Version

The model will be released before the end of the decade

Nissan has confirmed the development of a new generation GT-R: the R36 model will receive a hybrid powertrain and will be released by 2030. The plans were announced by Vice President and Head of Planning at Nissan North America, Ponz Pandikuthira, at the New York Auto Show. According to him, the first official announcements are expected by 2028.

The new Nissan GT-R R36 will be built on a completely new platform. At the same time, the power plant will remain partially connected to the current VR38 engine from the R35.

The company is considering a hybrid scheme while retaining the V6 engine block. At the same time, key components — cylinder heads, pistons and other elements — may be redesigned.

The need for changes is due to the tightening of environmental regulations, including Euro 7 requirements. The new GT-R is planned as a global model that meets the standards of different markets.

Nissan emphasized that electrification will become an integral part of the project, but a complete transition to electric traction is not being considered.

During development, engineers are focusing on the previous goals of the model, including testing on the Nürburgring track, where the previous GT-R was created.
