Nissan will introduce a new generation of the ProPilot driver assistance system in 2027; the technology will receive AI and a hardware platform comparable in level to Tesla and Wayve. The plans were announced by chief engineer Tetsuya Iijima. According to him, the new version is "equal to or better than a human" in driving quality. Japan will be the first market, after which the system will be rolled out in other countries.
The prototype was tested on a Nissan Ariya in Tokyo. The vehicle drove itself for 40 minutes through the city and on highways without driver intervention. The system detected intersections, pedestrians, cyclists, highway exits, and roadworks.
The hardware includes 11 cameras, 5 radars, and lidar. In the production version, the sensors will be integrated into the body. The system can pull out from parking, obey signals, and adapt speed within ±16 km/h of the limit.
Engineers consider the technology sufficient for L4 level, but it will be positioned as L2++ because of legal restrictions. This decision is related to liability and the lack of regulation in a number of countries.
The price has not yet been disclosed, but Nissan plans to make the ProPilot system mass-market. In Japan, it will debut on the Nissan Elgrand minivan.
