Chinese automaker BYD has confirmed that it is exploring options for participating in "Formula 1". Executive Vice President Li Ke said that company representatives have already held talks with the series management, including a meeting with championship CEO Stefano Domenicali in Shanghai.
At this stage, there are no specific commitments. The company is evaluating various formats of presence, including creating its own team, supplying hybrid powertrain components, or participating through sponsorship agreements. This approach indicates that BYD views "Formula 1" as an engineering platform, not just a marketing tool.
The company's interest is related to changes in technical regulations that came into force in 2026. The new rules increase the share of the electrical component in hybrid power units, shifting the focus to recuperation and energy management systems.
This direction is directly related to BYD's competencies in batteries and electric drives. At the same time, "Formula 1" remains a complex engineering environment where the integration of all systems is important, not just battery efficiency.
BYD remains one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in the world. By the end of 2025, the company sold about 4.6 million cars. In the first quarter of 2026, deliveries amounted to 688,939 units, which is 30.5% less year-on-year.
A final decision on participation in "Formula 1" has not yet been made. The company is evaluating how the new hybrid regulations align with its long-term strategy in electrification and powertrain development.
