Toyota has unexpectedly achieved great success in the Chinese market with the compact bZ3X crossover. The model, developed jointly with GAC, sold over 80,000 units in its first year and has been the best-selling car among joint foreign brands in the NEV segment in China for seven consecutive months.
The main reason for the hype is the price. The base Toyota bZ3X costs from 109,800 yuan (1,190,000 rubles), and during promotions, the price drops even below 98,000 yuan (1,060,000 rubles). For comparison, many modern Toyota crossovers in the US cost two to three times more.
However, this is not a "budget" car in the usual sense. The bZ3X offers a range of up to 610 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, a large multimedia screen, a set of electronic assistants, and even versions with lidar. Some configurations use the Momenta 5.0 system – a Chinese driver assistance platform with semi-autonomous driving functions.
Paradoxically, Toyota has long been criticized for its caution in the electric vehicle segment. Now, it is the Chinese market that has forced the company to accelerate sharply. In China, the Japanese brand is already competing not only with Tesla but also with BYD, Geely, and XPeng – companies that are constantly lowering prices and introducing new technologies faster.
It is particularly indicative that the bZ3X was essentially created specifically for China. The car is based on the local GAC Aion V platform and is not planned for the American market due to high tariffs on Chinese-assembled cars.
The bZ3X story shows an important change in the global automotive industry: China is no longer just the largest car market. Now, it is where the cheapest and most technologically advanced mass models are emerging – and even global brands like Toyota are forced to adapt to the new rules of the game.
