Tesla Recalls Model Y Due to Sticker, and the Problem Is More Serious Than It Seems

The absence of a simple vehicle weight plate can lead to overloading and accidents

Tesla announced a recall of 14,575 Tesla Model Y crossovers in the US due to a missing certification sticker on the body. At first glance, the problem seems minor, but the US regulator NHTSA considers it a potential accident factor. This refers to a special plate on the driver's door pillar. It indicates the permissible gross vehicle weight, loading restrictions, and tire parameters. Without this information, the owner can accidentally overload the car – especially when transporting luggage, passengers, or a trailer. NHTSA warns that overloading increases the risk of loss of control and accidents.

The problem affected vehicles produced from November 2024 to April 2026. According to Tesla, the malfunction occurred due to unstable operation of the automated computer vision system, which was supposed to check for the sticker on the assembly line.

This is one of the rare cases where Tesla cannot solve the problem with an OTA update. Owners will have to physically visit a service center, where specialists will check for the marking and install it manually if necessary.

The story clearly shows how much modern automotive industry depends on automation. Tesla actively uses machine vision and digital quality control in production, but even a small glitch in the algorithms can lead to a full recall of thousands of vehicles.

At the same time, the sticker itself plays a much more important role than it seems. For heavy electric SUVs with massive batteries, load control is especially critical: overloading affects braking distance, stability, and tire wear more significantly than in many gasoline models.
