Toyota is preparing a new generation of the GR86, and the first details about the project are already emerging. The next version of the iconic coupe could undergo significant technical changes while retaining its core essence – the classic formula of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car.

Today's GR86 remains one of the last relatively affordable cars with a naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. This is why the model has long become almost a symbol of resistance to the era of crossovers, electric vehicles, and digital cars.

Toyota may abandon the current joint development scheme with Subaru and switch to its own Gazoo Racing platform. The car will retain rear-wheel drive and a focus on driving pleasure. The main intrigue concerns the engine. Previously, various leaks and insider reports linked the future GR86 with a new turbocharged Toyota engine, and some sources even mentioned possible hybridization in the more distant future.

The GR86 exists at a time when almost the entire segment of affordable sports coupes is rapidly shrinking. Many compact sports models of the past have already disappeared, and surviving cars are becoming increasingly expensive and technologically complex.

Against this backdrop, Toyota looks almost like an anomaly. The company simultaneously sells the GR86, GR Corolla, GR Yaris, and continues to develop the Gazoo Racing lineup. Moreover, the brand is preparing a new flagship GR GT supercar with a hybrid V8 producing over 640 hp.

The success of the GR86 may be more important than most of Toyota's expensive sports projects. This is because the model remains an entry point into the world of driver-focused cars for young buyers and enthusiasts. That's why there's so much attention around the next generation. If Toyota can maintain moderate weight, a manual transmission, and an affordable price, the new GR86 could become one of the last representatives of the disappearing class of analog sports cars.
