Mercedes-Benz has officially launched series production of new Yasa electric motors at its Berlin plant. This technology is set to become the foundation for future high-performance AMG models and help the brand maintain its sporty character in the era of electrification.

The main feature of the development is the axial flux motor design. Unlike traditional radial flux electric motors, which are used in most modern electric vehicles, this design significantly reduces the size and weight of the powertrain while maintaining high power.

According to Mercedes, a single Yasa motor can develop up to 480 hp and about 800 Nm of torque. Its weight is approximately 24 kg. Thanks to its compactness, engineers have more freedom in vehicle layout, and the reduction in unsprung mass and overall weight positively affects handling.

The first production cars with the new units will appear on the AMG.EA platform, which is being created specifically for AMG's electric models. It is expected that the technology will allow the production of powerful sports cars without a significant increase in weight, which remains one of the main problems of modern electric vehicles.

Mercedes acquired the British company Yasa back in 2021, but until now, the technology has been used to a limited extent. Now the brand is moving to mass production, effectively starting a new stage in the development of its own electric powertrains.

For AMG, this could be one of the most important technical projects in recent years. If the stated characteristics are confirmed in production models, the new motors could change the approach to creating sports electric vehicles and close the gap between electric cars and traditional AMG models with internal combustion engines.
