Mobileye announced the launch of its own robotaxi service in the USA. For the company, this is a strategic pivot: instead of being a supplier of autonomous driving technologies, it will for the first time engage in passenger transportation independently.
The first self-driving cars will hit the roads of a major American city in 2027. Initially, Mobileye plans to deploy a fleet of approximately 100 vehicles, and within the next five years, increase it to 17,000 vehicles.
The project will be built around the Mobileye Drive autonomous driving system and the infrastructure of Moovit, a company known for its urban mobility and navigation services. However, Mobileye does not intend to manufacture cars itself: the company plans to cooperate with car manufacturers and fleet operators.
The news is particularly interesting against the backdrop of growing competition in the autonomous transportation market. Today, Waymo is considered the leader in this segment, with Tesla Robotaxi and Zoox projects actively developing, and Lyft is already preparing to launch a service based on Mobileye technologies in the USA.
The main question is not about the technology itself. Mobileye has been involved in autonomous control systems for over twenty years and supplies solutions to car manufacturers worldwide. What is much more important is whether the company can turn engineering developments into a profitable transportation business. It is at this stage that many robotaxi market participants have previously encountered difficulties.
