Honda announced a significant milestone in the history of the Accord: cumulative sales of the model in the US have exceeded 15 million units. Symbolically, the record coincided with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of one of the most famous sedans of the Japanese brand.
The first generation Honda Accord debuted in 1976, and soon the model appeared on the American market. Over the past decades, the sedan has competed with many rivals, but its main opponent remains the Toyota Camry. Although the Camry has regularly surpassed the Accord in annual sales in recent years, Honda, citing Wards Intelligence data, claims that the Accord remains the best-selling passenger car in the US over the past 50 years. Global sales of the model have already exceeded 25 million cars.
The anniversary car was purchased by Andrea, a 26-year-old resident of Southern California. The story turned out to be symbolic: her family has been choosing the Accord for several generations. Her father owned a 1997 model and later passed on a 2017 Accord Sport to his daughter. Now Andrea has purchased a 2026 Honda Accord Sport-L Hybrid, which became the 15 millionth unit sold in the US. Her younger sister purchased another Accord at the same dealership on the same day, becoming the owner of car number 15,000,001.
The anniversary Accord is equipped with a hybrid powertrain based on a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors. The total system output is 204 hp, and the Honda Sensing suite of electronic assistants is included as standard. Unlike some competitors, including the Toyota Camry and Kia K5, the model is offered exclusively with front-wheel drive.
Accord production in the US has been carried out at the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio, since 1982. During this time, the plant has produced more than 13 million cars. Earlier, the company reported on the possible relocation of the model's assembly to a plant in Indiana as part of the modernization of production facilities for the production of future electric vehicles, but the final decision has not yet been officially confirmed.
Despite the continued growth in popularity of crossovers, the success of the Accord shows that classic sedans still maintain high demand. Especially against the backdrop of constantly rising prices for new cars, which forces many buyers to once again pay attention to more traditional models.
