Mercedes-Benz is preparing the Chinese version of the new VLE – a fully electric premium MPV, which will be the first production model on the new modular Van Architecture. VLE production has already begun in Spain, and the Chinese factory in Fuzhou is expected to join production by the end of 2026.
During certification in China, the characteristics of two modifications were revealed – VLE 300 and VLE 400. Both received a seven-seat interior with a 2+2+3 layout, a wheelbase of 3340 mm, and a large body length of 5.31 m. The curb weight, depending on the version, ranges from 3030 to 3220 kg.
The basic VLE 300 is equipped with a single ZF electric motor on the front axle with a power of up to 200 kW (272 hp). The more powerful VLE 400 received two motors and all-wheel drive. The total peak power of the system reaches 305 kW (415 hp). Both versions use traction batteries with cells from the CATL and Mercedes-Benz joint venture, made using NMC technology.
Battery capacity and range have not yet been disclosed. However, the very choice of a dual-motor version shows that Mercedes-Benz expects to compete not only with comfort but also with dynamics.
In the Chinese market, the VLE will have to face already strong local players. These include Denza D9, Voyah Dream, Luxeed V9, Zeekr 009, and more expensive Maextro models. For Mercedes-Benz, this is a particularly important segment: Chinese manufacturers are actively transforming large MPVs from utilitarian transport into luxurious vehicles for families and VIP passengers.
