In the first half of 2026, 2.18 thousand car thefts were registered in Russia, which is 12.9% less than a year earlier. The number of thefts without the intent to steal decreased even more significantly — by 19.7%, to 3.65 thousand cases. In total, this is about 5.8 thousand crimes against 6.7 thousand a year earlier.

Experts name the development of video surveillance systems as the main factor. Cameras are installed not only on roads, but also near houses and in other places, and data from them is available almost in real time. This increases the likelihood of detecting a car and complicates the work of carjackers.

Insurers note another reason: it has become more difficult to transport stolen cars abroad and sell them on foreign markets. Standard anti-theft systems and monitoring systems provide additional protection.

At the same time, the list of cars attractive to criminals is changing. According to "AlfaStrakhovanie", Chinese models are increasingly noticeable among frequently stolen cars — Solaris HS, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max, Geely Monjaro, and Haval Jolion. The number of commercial vehicle thefts has also increased, including "Gazelle" Next and FAW vans.
