Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin stated that she received information about a possible authorization for Chinese automakers to sell cars in the US as part of a broader agreement with China. This is currently just a rumor, not an adopted administration decision.
Currently, the American market is effectively closed to Chinese passenger cars. In addition to high tariffs, there are restrictions related to connected car technologies and the origin of software and hardware. Congress, on the other hand, is promoting a bill that should enshrine a ban on the sale and production of connected cars associated with China.
If the rules change, the main consequence will be the entry into the American market of manufacturers who have already accumulated significant experience in electric vehicles, batteries, and software. Chinese companies can compete not only on price but also on the speed of model updates and the level of electronic systems.
There is no confirmation yet that the White House is indeed ready to allow the import of Chinese cars. Moreover, the US automotive industry recently urged Congress to prevent such a scenario and finally solidify restrictions until the end of 2026.
