A video featuring 98-year-old Tesla Model Y owner Larry went viral on social media after Elon Musk posted it. In the video, the man says he uses FSD (Supervised) for almost all his trips and doesn't feel the need to constantly check intersections. The post garnered millions of views.

Technically, FSD is indeed capable of performing turns, changing lanes, reacting to traffic lights, and navigating intersections independently. For this, the car uses a set of external cameras and computer vision software algorithms. But the name "Supervised" is crucial here: Tesla explicitly states that the function does not make the car autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver.

This creates an important contradiction. The more confidently the system handles everyday maneuvers, the easier it is for the driver to perceive it as a full-fledged autopilot. However, FSD is still a driver assistance system, not an autonomous driving system.

The story emerged amidst renewed attention to the misuse of Tesla's assistants. Reuters reports 43 videos showing drivers appearing asleep or completely distracted while driving; 17 such videos appeared in 2026.

For the technology itself, this is more important than a single viral video: the development of FSD depends not only on the car's ability to recognize its environment but also on how reliably the system monitors the human's readiness to intervene.
