The first generation Peugeot 308 became, perhaps, one of the most controversial cars of its time. For some, it is the embodiment of style and European charm, for others, it is a source of endless problems and expenses. In France, this model was called technologically advanced and comfortable, but in Russia its reputation turned out to be much less brilliant. Owners are still divided into two camps: Francophiles who praise the smooth ride, and Francophobes who are ready to erase the 308 from memory forever.
The main complaints about the car are well known. Modest ground clearance and a long front overhang make each parking a challenge, and the four-speed AL4 automatic transmission and capricious Prince gasoline engines, created in collaboration with BMW, have become the subject of anecdotes. Owners complain about constant knocks, vibrations and unstable engine operation, as well as a monstrous oil consumption - up to a liter per thousand kilometers. One of them recalls how, over six years of ownership, he changed the timing chain, rollers, oil seals, pump and still did not get rid of extraneous sounds. The result is logical - the car was sold, and the owner admitted that he felt real relief.
But there are those who look at the Peugeot 308 with a degree of sympathy. One of the former owners admits: the car is spacious, comfortable and economical on the highway - about eight liters per hundred kilometers. At a speed of 140–150 km/h, the hatchback confidently stays on the road, and the suspension, although a bit harsh, provides stability. However, according to him, the repair turns into a test of patience and wallet: to replace a simple part, you have to disassemble half the car, and the electrics with its complex connections do not forgive mistakes.
Some car enthusiasts, on the contrary, consider the 308 underestimated. Owners note the galvanized body, aluminum hood, plastic fenders and pleasant handling. With proper care and frequent oil changes, the engine can serve faithfully, especially in combination with a manual gearbox. But there are enough problems: sticking suspension bolts, fragile heating threads of the seats, capricious stove and characteristic "oil consumption". The heater radiator regularly becomes clogged, which causes cold air to blow on the passenger, but the manufacturer at least provided easy access for cleaning.
The interior of the Peugeot 308 is also controversial. The interior seems cozy to many, but the ergonomics leave much to be desired: the location of the buttons and climate control is illogical, and the mirrors are uncomfortable. The materials quickly lose their appearance - peeling steering wheel, faded seats and sticky "soft-touch" on the torpedo are found in almost all owners. At the same time, the trunk is praised for its capacity, and the acoustics sound unexpectedly pleasant even without modifications.
Among those who still fell in love with the French hatchback, there are more often experienced drivers who are ready to put up with its features and pay more attention to the technical part. They are sure: the Peugeot 308 is able to bring pleasure if you take care of it and do not save on consumables. But most admit that this is not the car that will forgive negligence. It requires patience, money and love for mechanics.
For those who are looking for reliability and peace of mind, this hatchback can be a real test. But for those who are ready to put up with its French quirks, it can give a good experience. The main thing is to understand that the path of suffering for the 308 begins not with the purchase, but with the first breakdown.
