Unexpected Brands: Cars from Africa

What's behind exotic names and unusual projects

After 2022, the appearance of new car brands ceased to be something unexpected. The market has already managed to adapt to Chinese brands, Iranian manufacturers, and revived "domestic" names. However, an even more unusual scenario is now being discussed: theoretically, cars of African origin may appear on the Russian market.

At first glance, this seems exotic. If you don't take into account such well-known names as Laraki, or specialized vehicles like the Marauder, it seems that the African automotive industry is nothing more than a myth. However, this is not the case. In different countries of the continent, there are real projects, albeit often niche and closely related to foreign technologies.

At the same time, one should not expect a massive entry of such cars into the Russian market. However, the projects themselves deserve attention, if only as an example of the diversity of the global automotive industry outside the usual triad of "Europe - Japan - China".

One of the most discussed examples recently has been Kiira Motors Corporation from Uganda. The reason was the statements about the readiness to supply electric vehicles for export, including to Russia.

In practice, the company's lineup is still more experimental. The most famous model is the Kiira EV, introduced back in 2011. It is a compact three-door electric car with a power of about 26 hp with a range of up to 80 km.

In addition, there are other developments in the portfolio:

  • EV Smack hybrid project with a total capacity of about 109 hp
  • EVS gasoline sedan;
  • buses under the Kayoola sub-brand

In general, Kiira can be seen more as a technological platform and a demonstration of capabilities than as a ready-made mass product for export.

A more applied approach is demonstrated by the Nigerian company Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing. Its strategy is based on cooperation with Chinese manufacturers, in particular with BAIC.

A fairly wide model range has been created on this basis:

  • IVM Ikenga and G20 Smart minivans
  • IVM Caris sedan
  • G5T and G6T crossovers
  • G40 and G80 SUVs

At the same time, the latest models visually refer to such well-known cars as the Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Despite local assembly, Innoson cars have not become truly massive: their cost remains high for the domestic market, and competition with used cars limits demand.

Another notable player is the Kantanka Automobile brand from Ghana. Production here began in the 1990s, and today the company offers a fairly diverse range - from sedans to electric vehicles.

Characteristic features of the brand:

  • bright corporate identity and emphasis on "premium" positioning
  • the use of familiar technical solutions of Asian origin
  • active promotion of their own models as status

Examples include the Amoanimaa sedan with a 1.5 engine (102 hp) and an automatic transmission. The lineup also includes the Amoanimah EV electric car, the Omama pickup, the Onantefo SUV and the K71 compact crossover.

A more utilitarian approach is demonstrated by the Kenyan company Mobius Motors. Its Mobius Two project was created as the simplest and most affordable SUV for harsh road conditions.

The design of the car initially included a tubular frame, a simplified body, a partially leaf spring suspension, a 1.6-liter Toyota engine (86 hp) and a capacity of up to eight people.

In the early stages, the developers saved even on glazing. Later, the model was refined: a new body, power steering and basic comfort elements appeared.

The next stage was the Mobius Three, which, however, turned out to be a redesigned version of the Chinese Beijing BJ40.

The South African company URI Purposely Built Vehicles deserves special attention. Its products are not so much traditional cars as modular solutions adapted to specific tasks.

Features of the URI approach:

  • the use of a spatial frame
  • Toyota diesel engines
  • the possibility of configuration for specific needs

Such machines are produced in various versions:

  • for agriculture and farming
  • for the mining industry
  • for police and army
  • for medical services
  • for tourist and safari parks

The client can choose the number of seats, the level of protection, additional equipment, and even body options, turning the car into a specialized tool.

In general, the African automotive industry is a complex and heterogeneous environment. It combines local engineering solutions, active use of the Chinese technological base, and a focus on specific operating conditions.

Despite its limited presence in the global market, such projects demonstrate that the automotive industry is developing not only in traditional centers. African manufacturers are forming their own approach, in which practicality and adaptation to conditions are often more important than global competition.
