Renault Duster: there are serious drawbacks, but there are advantages too

Breaking down the real shortcomings of the popular SUV - from paintwork to multimedia and the cost of spare parts

The Renault Duster has long established itself as one of the most practical and low-maintenance crossovers. It is valued for its affordability, confident off-road capability, and relatively simple servicing. At first glance, it is a universal solution for everyday use, capable of handling most tasks without unnecessary expense.

However, even cars with a "people's car" reputation are not without flaws. The Duster has them too, and some of them become noticeable only over time — during actual use. Sometimes this happens even before the warranty period ends: outwardly everything looks fine, but gradually it becomes clear that this model cannot be called ideal.

What shortcomings are we talking about exactly, and why it is better to know about them in advance:

Problems with the roof paintwork

One of the most noticeable defects is cracking paint on the roof. It appears without any external impact: neither an accident nor aggressive washing is to blame. As a rule, the first signs appear with the onset of cold weather, when the lacquer begins to crack near the roof rails.

Similar issues have already been observed:

  • on the previous-generation Duster;
  • on earlier models, including Logan

The fact remains unchanged: over the years of production, this shortcoming has never been fully eliminated.

Presumably, the cause is related to differences in the thermal expansion of materials. The lacquer, paint, and mastic used on the roof react differently to temperature fluctuations. As a result, the coating is subjected to stress and fails to withstand it, which leads to cracks.

It is important to consider two points:

  • the structural strength of the body is not affected — this concerns the coating only
  • the exact cause of the problem has not been confirmed by the manufacturer, which means a quick solution is unlikely.

Easy Link: functional, but unstable

In expensive trim levels, the Duster is equipped with the Easy Link multimedia system with an eight-inch display. In terms of capabilities, it looks modern and offers a wide range of functions.

Nevertheless, there are reliability issues. Users report system freezes. They occur less often than, for example, on the Renault Arkana, but they cannot be completely ignored. Restarting helps restore operation, but this is only a temporary solution.

A separate problem is the appearance of image defects:

  • a vertical line of dead pixels may appear on the screen
  • most often it has a green tint and runs across the entire display

At the same time, there is no mechanical damage: the screen has not been subjected to impacts or scratches. The failure occurs on its own, which points to questionable matrix quality. Particularly alarming is the fact that such malfunctions appear even on new cars.

Bumper caps cannot withstand off-road use

The front bumper has two plastic caps: one covers the towing eye, the other a service opening for access to connectors. The part is small, but it causes noticeable irritation during use.

When driving off-road or crossing a ford, the caps may simply pop out for no visible reason. Losing one of them means having to buy a new part, which costs about 1,000 rubles.

For a vehicle presented as a crossover with off-road capabilities, this looks like an underdeveloped solution. In practice, owners have to look for a workaround:

  • remove the caps before driving onto difficult sections
  • store them in the trunk to avoid losing them

Dirty sills — an inevitable compromise

The body design includes sills that are not covered by the doors. All road dirt settles on them, and because of the pronounced protrusion, avoiding contact when getting in or out is practically impossible.

The problem is especially noticeable in the off-season, when the roads are covered with mud:

  • clothes regularly get dirty when getting in
  • keeping trousers clean becomes difficult

Compared with the first generation, the situation has improved somewhat — back then even the side panels got dirty. However, the issue has not been completely resolved, and the car cannot be called neat in this respect.

The cost and delivery times of spare parts

Despite the relatively affordable price of the car itself, maintenance may turn out to be less budget-friendly than expected. This is especially true of body parts and lighting components.

Approximate prices are as follows:

  • tailgate — about 50,000 rubles
  • rear bumper — around 25,000 rubles
  • rear LED lights — about 14,000 rubles each

At the same time, the problem is aggravated by waiting times:

  • the standard delivery time for body parts is about two weeks
  • rare components may take a month or longer

A positive point remains the availability of consumables. Oils, filters, and brake pads usually do not cause difficulties in sourcing. But in the event of serious damage, repair costs and timelines increase noticeably.

The Renault Duster still remains one of the most sought-after crossovers on the market. Compared with the first generation, it has become more comfortable, quieter, and more dynamic. Improvements have affected ergonomics, visibility, and handling.

Nevertheless, a number of shortcomings remain. Among them are:

  • the paint's tendency to crack
  • unstable multimedia operation
  • vulnerable bumper caps
  • sills that get dirty
  • the high cost of certain spare parts

These features do not make the purchase pointless, but they do require attention. Knowing such nuances in advance helps avoid disappointment and take a more informed approach to choosing a car.
