In the Soviet Union, buses of the Hungarian brand Ikarus became the basis for intercity and urban passenger transportation for many years. The first vehicles began to arrive in small batches in the early 1950s. At that time, the country received Ikarus 55 and Ikarus Lux models — relatively simple buses with moderate characteristics for that time.
In the 1960s, the Ikarus 180 appeared on Soviet roads, becoming the first articulated bus operated in the USSR. However, Hungarian technology gained real popularity later, when mass deliveries of the Ikarus 200 family began. It was then that the streets of Soviet cities were filled with single Ikarus 260 and articulated Ikarus 280, better known as "accordions".
These buses were distinguished by a spacious interior and large capacity, but they had one unusual feature — the engine was located not at the front or rear, but under the floor, approximately in the central part of the body. This solution is often explained by various legends, although the real story of its appearance is much more interesting.
The central engine was conceived at the design stage
There is a widespread belief that the first buses had a rear engine, and then the power unit had to be moved to the center due to excessive load on the rear axle. According to this version, the heavy diesel allegedly caused the rear of the body to sag. In reality, this story is not true.
The development of the Ikarus 200 family began in 1966. Even then, engineers were designing not only a single bus, but also the future articulated Ikarus 280 model. It was the need to maximize the unification of both vehicles that led to the engine being initially placed under the floor of the body.
In other words, the central layout was not the result of a late modernization. It was incorporated into the design at the stage of creating the entire family.
Why engineers abandoned traditional schemes
There were quite practical reasons for this decision: if the engine had been placed in the front of the bus, it would have complicated the organization of the driver's workplace and would not have allowed for a full-fledged front door.
The rear arrangement of the power unit also had its drawbacks. It reduced the usable volume of the passenger compartment and was not well suited for an articulated design, where it was necessary to use the internal space as efficiently as possible. Placing the engine under the floor allowed several problems to be solved at once:
- increase passenger capacity;
- maintain a flat and spacious interior;
- distribute the load more evenly between the axles;
- improve the bus's stability on turns and slippery roads.
For high-floor buses, such a balance was especially important.
What drivers liked about the central layout
Almost all Soviet Ikarus buses were high-floor. The reason was not increased safety requirements, but the technical specifications of that time. The main task was considered to be accommodating the maximum number of passengers, while the issues of convenience for people with limited mobility were practically not taken into account.
Thanks to the engine's location under the floor, the passage inside the bus was almost flat. During peak hours, when the cabin was completely full, this facilitated passenger movement.
An additional advantage was relatively good sound insulation. The engine was located under the passenger compartment, so the noise level was perceived as lower than with some other layout options.
What disadvantages did this design have?
Despite the obvious advantages, the central engine location significantly complicated maintenance. To access the power unit and gearbox, mechanics had to open several hatches located both in the cabin floor and on the sides of the body. The engine itself was made horizontal, as this was the only way to place it under the floor. Because of this, the central part of the engine compartment had to be made wider.
Over time, other problems arose. After wear of seals or not-so-high-quality maintenance, the smell of diesel fuel and exhaust gases could appear in the cabin. Heating remained a separate difficulty. The buses were equipped with autonomous diesel heaters, which effectively heated the cabin, but consumed additional fuel. To reduce diesel consumption, drivers often turned off the heaters, which made it quite cold inside the bus in winter.
The main disadvantages of the design included:
- difficult access to the engine and transmission;
- the need for maintenance through numerous hatches;
- the likelihood of fuel and exhaust odors appearing when seals wear out;
- high fuel consumption by autonomous heaters.
Why the "two-hundreds" were still considered successful
Despite the listed features, Ikarus 200 family buses were highly respected among drivers and mechanics. In the conditions of the USSR, there was practically no full-fledged alternative for mass passenger transportation.
According to specialists, many Ikarus 260 and Ikarus 280 engines covered about 500 thousand kilometers before the first major overhaul. After high-quality restoration, the power unit could travel another 150 thousand kilometers. The total resource often significantly exceeded half a million kilometers, which was considered a very decent result for buses of that time.
Why the engine was later moved to the rear
Over time, the requirements for buses began to change. Manufacturers gradually switched to a low-floor layout, where the rear engine arrangement proved to be much more convenient.
Ikarus took the first steps in this direction in the early 1980s, introducing the Ikarus 284 model, which became a kind of transitional option between the familiar 280 series and more modern buses. Later, this scheme was finally adopted on the Ikarus 435 and Ikarus 438 models. Moving the engine to the rear significantly simplified equipment maintenance and made access to the power unit much more convenient.
However, more modern buses already differed in a much more complex design and widespread use of electronics. Therefore, many drivers and mechanics still remember them much less often than the simple, reliable, and unpretentious Ikarus 260 and Ikarus 280 with their unusual central engine. It was the 200-series buses that became a symbol of public transport of the Soviet era. Although the Hungarian brand subsequently completely left the Russian market, it is these vehicles that remained in the memory of millions of passengers as the most recognizable and reliable representatives of their time.
