Smart was far from the first to show that a city car could be tiny. Back in 1982, Mercedes-Benz introduced the NAFA concept – a car just 2.5 meters long, which was even 19 centimeters shorter than the modern Smart ForTwo. Yet, the German prototype featured solutions quite uncharacteristic for microcars of that era: all-wheel drive and sliding doors.
The NAFA never reached mass production. The official reason was related to passive safety: the design did not meet the requirements Mercedes-Benz set for its vehicles. However, more complex marketing circumstances also stood behind this decision.
A small Mercedes that looked too unusual
The NAFA looked nothing like the familiar Mercedes-Benz models of the early 1980s. At that time, the brand was primarily associated with large sedans and smooth lines, whereas the new prototype was practically a compact cube on small wheels.
Instead of a traditional chrome grille, it featured a flat front end with a vertical windshield. The driver's seating position was high, almost like in a minivan, providing good visibility.
Special attention was paid to parking. Sliding doors allowed the cabin to be opened even when the car was parked almost flush against a wall or an adjacent vehicle.
The concept was extremely simple: engineers wanted to find out what kind of car a person truly needed for daily urban commutes. The result was a car with the following parameters:
- length – 2.5 meters;
- two seats;
- virtually no trunk;
- high seating position;
- sliding doors;
- all-wheel drive.
For the early 1980s, such a combination looked very unusual.
Why Mercedes needed a microcar
City streets were already facing traffic jams and a lack of space back then. Therefore, Mercedes-Benz engineers decided to test the idea of a maximally compact car that could be used primarily for urban travel.
The small size gave the NAFA an obvious advantage in parking. Thanks to the sliding doors, the driver did not need to leave free space on the side of the car to open them.
The high body, in turn, allowed occupants to sit almost upright inside. The driver did not have to significantly bend their neck or adopt a low seating position, which is characteristic of many compact cars.
The result was a unique combination: externally, the car occupied minimal space, while internally, it tried to use the available volume as efficiently as possible.
All-wheel drive for a 2.5-meter car
The technical aspect of the project turned out to be no less interesting than its appearance. The NAFA received all-wheel drive – a solution that seemed almost exotic for such a small car in 1982.
It was assumed that such a system would help the car confidently navigate urban roads in icy conditions, preventing the driving wheels from slipping.
The engine was located transversely at the front, paired with an automatic transmission. Engineers had to fit all of this into a body just 2.5 meters long.
The result was a car that, in terms of size, was closer to a large quadricycle or a small minivan than to a traditional Mercedes-Benz.
Why the NAFA never made it to production
The official explanation for abandoning mass production seemed quite logical. The concept did not provide the necessary level of passive safety.
The NAFA had virtually no space for a proper crumple zone at the front: there was no familiar long hood or trunk that could absorb impact energy. In a serious frontal collision at 60 km/h, such a design posed obvious problems for driver protection.
A modern crash test of such a car would look extremely harsh.
But safety alone was not the whole story, judging by the circumstances presented in the source material. Mercedes-Benz already had commercial vans and trucks with cab-over-engine designs, where the driver was also located directly in front of the powertrain.
In the case of the NAFA, another problem arose – customer perception of the car. A small car with a three-pointed star might deviate too much from the usual perception of a premium Mercedes-Benz.
For a customer accustomed to seeing large and expensive cars from the brand, a 2.5-meter urban microcar looked completely different.
The market further complicated the situation. In the mid-1980s, fuel was no longer perceived as such an expensive resource as it was immediately after the oil crisis a decade earlier. European buyers were again showing interest in larger cars.
It turned out that the NAFA offered a solution to a problem that, at the time, was not perceived by most of the market as serious enough.
The NAFA idea returned 15 years later
The project itself, however, was not useless. Many principles embedded in the NAFA later found their embodiment in production Mercedes-Benz cars.
Fifteen years after the prototype appeared, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168 was launched. It was almost a meter longer than the NAFA and had conventional hinged doors, but the key idea remained: to make the car compact on the outside, but as spacious as possible on the inside.
High seating, short overhangs, and rational use of interior space were already quite understandable to buyers.
The Smart ForTwo came even closer to the original concept. Its length was about 2.7 meters, the cabin was designed for two people, and in early versions, the powertrain was located at the rear.
From the NAFA, the Smart inherited the very philosophy of an extremely compact city car, although sliding doors did not appear in the production model.
Interestingly, a similar solution was later used by another brand. The Peugeot 1007, which appeared about two decades later, featured sliding doors. However, this project proved to be a commercial failure.
Technology finally caught up with the idea
The comparison of the NAFA with the modern Smart ForTwo is particularly telling. The car, which in 1982 could not be made safe enough for mass production, a decade and a half later could pass modern Euro NCAP tests better than many sedans.
It turns out that the problem was not only in the size of the car itself. By that time, technologies had emerged that allowed for significantly more effective passenger protection even in a compact body.
That is why the story of the NAFA can be viewed not as an unsuccessful attempt to create too small a Mercedes, but as an early experiment with a format that became in demand much later.
What happened to the only prototype
One of the surviving NAFA units is now in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. From time to time, the prototype appears at thematic exhibitions dedicated to the history of urban transport.
For its time, the NAFA was indeed too unusual. It offered a compact body, high seating, sliding doors, and all-wheel drive at a time when such a set of solutions was not yet perceived as natural for a city car.
The main paradox of this car is that Mercedes-Benz actually tested the idea of the future long before the market was ready for it. A short city car with high seating and a rationally organized interior later became a familiar format, and the very concept of a compact city car received new development in the era of electric vehicles – for example, in the Citroën Ami.
The NAFA did not become a production model, but the experiment proved important. Mercedes-Benz tried to make a city car as small as possible in the early 1980s and created a car that was ahead of its time.
