The phrase that Russia allegedly never knew how to create normal automatic transmissions has long become an automotive stereotype. Domestic cars almost always used foreign units — Aisin, Jatco, ZF, BorgWarner. But there was an attempt in Russian history to create its own modern automatic transmission.
Moreover, it was not about a simple copy of a ready-made foreign solution. In the mid-2000s, Russia developed a seven-speed planetary gearbox FT-703, designed for front-wheel drive cars with a transverse engine. In 2006, experimental units were already installed on real Lada Kalina.

In terms of the number of gears, the Russian development even surpassed the German DSG of the Volkswagen concern, which at that time had six speeds. However, the FT-703 never became a production gearbox for mass-produced Ladas.
Why did the promising project stop — and was the problem really with Russian engineers?
When the main thing was not convenience, but industry
To understand the fate of the domestic automatic transmission, it is necessary to go much further back in time.
After 1917, the automotive industry in Russia was practically in its infancy. There were about 42 thousand cars in the country, and the vast majority of cars were foreign-made. There was practically no mass domestic auto industry.
Therefore, the initial task was not even to create comfortable cars for a wide range of buyers. It was first necessary to learn how to service and repair existing equipment, and then to create an industrial base almost from scratch.
The first completely domestic car, the AMO F-15, appeared only in 1926. At the same time, its design was a complete copy of the Italian Fiat, and the power unit worked with a simple four-speed manual gearbox.
The next major step was the construction of an automobile plant in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1930–1932, it was created by agreement with Ford. Subsequently, this plant became known as GAZ.
The Soviet industry at that time had completely different priorities:
- it was necessary to provide the country with cars and trucks;
- it was necessary to simultaneously create an industrial base to prepare for a future war.
While the Soviet automotive industry was just forming, American manufacturers were already experimenting with automatic transmissions. General Motors created a separate division in 1939 that was engaged in their development, and already in 1940, it introduced Hydra-Matic and began installing this gearbox on production cars.
By 1941, the USSR did not have its own mass automatic unit for passenger cars. But explaining this solely by a lack of engineering competencies would be wrong. The country at that time was solving a fundamentally different problem — creating industry and preparing for war.
The war showed the difference in priorities
During World War II, the differences between the approaches became even more apparent.

American industry could use existing civilian technologies in military equipment. For example, the Hydra-Matic transmission was used on the light tank M5 Stuart. Moreover, two gearboxes were used at once — one for each Cadillac engine. This made it possible not to waste time developing a completely new solution.
Soviet technology developed in conditions of much greater need to simplify production and operation. The T-34 used a gearbox from pre-war vehicles, the control of which required significant physical effort from the driver-mechanic.
Therefore, in 1942, it was decided to change the design and develop a new gearbox with constant mesh gears. It became significantly easier to shift.
A curious situation arises: American engineers during the war years could improve an already existing technology, while Soviet designers had to look for the simplest and most suitable solutions here and now.
The difference was not so much in the level of engineering school as in the conditions and tasks set.
After the war, the USSR nevertheless gained its own experience in creating hydromechanical transmissions. In the ZIS hydro-unit bureau, automatic transmissions were developed under the influence of American Hydra-Matic and Dynaflow. However, their scope of application remained very narrow: such gearboxes were installed on representative ZIL-111 and GAZ-14 "Chaika".
By 1990, a peculiar two-level system had formed: there was a small production of hydromechanical automatic transmissions for individual models, while the mass car fleet still managed with manual gearboxes.
After 1991, another task appeared
The collapse of the USSR changed not only the economy, but also the very formulation of the question. Now the automotive industry had to be developed in market conditions. A mass buyer appeared, for whom not only price and maintainability were important, but also ease of operation.
It was then that the conditions for the development of a modern Russian automatic transmission arose. The first work began at NAMI. In 2002–2003, the institute's specialists were engaged in the control system of the seven-speed automatic transmission FT-702.
Then, the private company KATE took on the task of bringing the project to industrial application. It was founded in Moscow in 2005 at the Bauman Institute. This is how the FT-703 development appeared — no longer just research work, but a gearbox that was initially designed for specific production cars of AvtoVAZ.
Seven gears without a torque converter
The FT-703 was a seven-speed planetary automatic transmission for front-wheel drive cars with a transverse engine. Its technical refinement was carried out jointly with British Ricardo, and later Austrian AVL joined the work. The design was aimed at AvtoVAZ models — Granta, Kalina, Largus, and Vesta.
The declared parameters looked quite modern:
- seven forward gears and one reverse;
- gearbox weight — 62 kg;
- declared resource — 250,000 km.

At the same time, in terms of dimensions, the FT-703 was comparable to a five-speed manual gearbox. This was important: the transmission could be placed in the engine compartment of VAZ cars without extensive redesign. But the main feature of the Russian project was not only the seven-speed scheme.
Classic hydromechanical automatic transmissions, from the pre-war Hydra-Matic to modern Aisin and ZF units, were built around a torque converter. The FT-703 completely abandoned it.
To transmit torque when starting from a standstill, Russian engineers used multi-plate wet clutches. Such a solution made it possible to reduce parasitic power losses and reduce the load on friction elements, which, in turn, should have a positive effect on the transmission's service life.
That is, we had not an attempt to put an already familiar hydromechanical automatic transmission on a domestic car, but an independent design with its own architecture.
The gearbox was tested not only on the stand
In 2006, the FT-703 moved from the category of a laboratory project to a practical stage. Prototypes were installed on real Lada Kalina.
This is a fundamental point: engineers checked the operation not only of individual units on test benches, but also of the entire system directly on the car. During operation, the mechanical part and electronics were debugged.
KATE also developed its own electronic control unit. It turned out that by the mid-2000s, Russia had a ready-made concept of its own automatic unit, designed specifically for mass-produced front-wheel drive cars.
But it was at this moment that a factor appeared in the history of the project that turned out to be much stronger than the technical characteristics.
Foreign investor changed AvtoVAZ's plans
The situation around AvtoVAZ gradually changed in the 2000s. In 2008, part of the company's shares was acquired by French Renault, and since 2014, the Renault-Nissan group became AvtoVAZ's partner.
For a large international concern, the need to independently bring the Russian automatic gearbox to mass production no longer seemed obvious. The alliance had its own transmissions that could be adapted and localized for VAZ cars. As a result, the contract with KATE was frozen. This happened despite the fact that the FT-703 successfully passed both bench and road tests.

In other words, the project was stopped not after the gearbox failed the tests, but at the moment the manufacturer's strategic course changed. Later, the Jatco variator appeared on AvtoVAZ cars. Since 2019, it began to be used on cars of the brand. This was a transmission widely used in Renault-Nissan, so the need for its own mass automatic transmission for VAZ cars finally faded into the background.
KATE still continued to work
The developer of the FT-703 itself did not disappear. KATE switched to more expensive and small-batch projects. In particular, it was engaged in automatic transmissions for Aurus cars, created as part of the "Kortezh" project. These included longitudinal RL608 gearboxes.
A rather paradoxical situation arose. Russia was able to create its own automatic transmission, tested it on a real car, and even designed it for mass-produced VAZ models. But in the end, it did not receive mass application.
So why is there still no domestic automatic transmission?
If you look at the entire history consistently, the answer turns out to be significantly more complex than the common thesis that Russian engineers allegedly simply do not know how to make automatic transmissions.
For decades, the domestic industry faced other challenges. First, it was necessary to create automobile production almost from scratch. Then — to provide the country with equipment, withstand the war, and restore industry. A mass buyer, focused on comfort and convenience of an automatic transmission, appeared much later.
The FT-703 became one of the attempts to close this gap in market Russia. It had seven gears, a weight of 62 kg, a declared resource of 250 thousand kilometers, its own electronics, and an unusual scheme for classic automatic transmissions with wet multi-plate clutches. But the technically successful project turned out to be without mass application.
The problem was not that the engineers could not make the gearbox. The FT-703 simply did not find a suitable place in the changed structure of the domestic auto industry.

And this, perhaps, is the main paradox of its history: the Russian automotive automatic transmission existed. It worked on a real Lada. Its developers tried to put it into production. But in the end, the domestic industry chose the path of using existing foreign solutions.
So the history of the FT-703 is not so much a story of an unsuccessful engineering development as a story of a project that appeared at the wrong time and never got the opportunity to become mass-produced.
