Jerks, misfires, and the feeling that the engine momentarily stops responding normally to the accelerator pedal are reasons to pay attention to your car. Especially if, when trying to accelerate, the engine starts to choke or the car unexpectedly loses power.
But there's no need to immediately prepare for expensive repairs. The reason for such behavior is not always related to a serious breakdown. Sometimes it's enough to dry the ignition system or replace a long-clogged filter. However, there are also malfunctions that, if ignored, can lead to much more unpleasant consequences.
What happens inside the engine
To understand why a car starts to jerk, it's worth recalling the operating principle of a conventional four-stroke engine. Most modern internal combustion engines operate on this cycle.

It consists of four sequential stages:
- Intake. The piston moves down, the intake valve opens, and the fuel-air mixture enters the cylinder.
- Compression. The valve closes, the piston rises and compresses the mixture. At the top, the spark plug creates a spark, after which the mixture ignites.
- Power stroke. The gases formed during combustion rapidly expand and push the piston down. This stage converts the energy of fuel combustion into motion.
- Exhaust. The exhaust valve opens, the piston moves up again and expels the exhaust gases into the exhaust system.
If one of these processes is disrupted, the engine can no longer function normally. With insufficient fuel, air, or energy for ignition, the mixture burns incorrectly or does not burn at all. At this moment, the driver experiences misfires, jerks, or loss of power.
Moisture can extinguish the spark
One of the simplest causes of unstable engine operation is condensate entering the ignition system. Moisture disrupts the normal formation of a spark at the plug, causing the fuel to not ignite properly.
This malfunction is especially common during cold starts and in damp weather. If the car is parked outside, the likelihood of condensation is higher. However, after the engine warms up and in dry weather, the symptoms may almost completely disappear.
You can check this option quite simply: unscrew the spark plug and assess its condition. If it is wet, condensation may well be the cause.
What to do: The ignition system must be dried. In the simplest case, it is enough to carefully wipe it with a dry, clean cloth.
Excess air disrupts the mixture
Another possible cause is air leakage into the combustion chamber. For normal engine operation, a certain ratio of air and fuel is necessary. If there is too much air, the mixture becomes lean and may stop igniting properly.
The tightness of the system can be compromised due to worn gaskets and seals on the valves. Their service life is approximately five years.

As a result, the engine receives a mixture that it is not designed for, and when the load increases, the problem becomes particularly evident: instead of normal acceleration, the car starts to jerk and lose traction.
What to do: Worn elements must be replaced.
Filters can also deprive the engine of power
Contamination of the air or fuel filter directly affects engine operation. A clogged element stops passing the necessary amount of air or gasoline, making normal mixture preparation impossible.
Therefore, problems can appear in several modes at once - both during startup and when trying to accelerate. It is worth checking the fuel pump separately: it can also become contaminated and require cleaning and flushing. In this case, engine repair is not at all necessary - sometimes the problem lies literally in consumable elements.
What to do: Replace contaminated filters, and if necessary, clean and flush the fuel pump.
Damaged wires can leave spark plugs without a spark
If the electrical part of the ignition system is unstable, the engine also starts to misfire. In particular, the cause may be damage to the wires that supply electricity to the spark plugs.
In case of serious insulation damage, the problem can sometimes be noticed visually. To do this, open the hood and turn on the ignition in the dark. If the insulation is damaged, sparks may be visible on the wires. However, you should not interfere with the ignition system yourself.
What to do: If you suspect wiring damage, it is best to contact an auto electrician.
Throttle position sensor disrupts fuel supply
Another possible source of jerks is a malfunction of the throttle position sensor, or TPS. Its task is related to regulating the fuel supply to the engine.
If the sensor starts to malfunction, the amount of fuel supplied may be insufficient or, conversely, excessive. In some cases, injection does not occur as it should at all. One of the characteristic signs of such a malfunction is the "Check Engine" indicator lighting up on the dashboard.

What to do: The sensor needs to be checked and recalibrated if necessary.
A clogged catalytic converter literally chokes the engine
The catalytic converter is responsible for reducing the toxicity of exhaust gases. Over time, its working cells can become covered with foreign particles and insoluble compounds. When the element's throughput drops significantly, exhaust gases stop leaving the engine normally.
The result is well known to the driver: the car struggles to gain speed, and when trying to accelerate, the engine literally chokes. At the same time, other signs may appear:
- increased oil consumption;
- increased fuel consumption;
- black smoke from the exhaust pipe.
Do not delay repairs in such a situation. A clogged catalytic converter can lead to engine overheating. At the same time, makeshift cleaning methods can be dangerous and completely destroy the unit.
What to do: Repair or replace the catalytic converter as soon as possible.
Ordinary spark plugs sometimes turn out to be the main reason
Bad gasoline and clogged injectors are often the first suspects when a car loses dynamics. However, sometimes it's much simpler: the engine suffers due to worn spark plugs.
For normal mixture ignition, the correct timing of spark formation and sufficient spark power are necessary. As the spark plug electrodes wear out, the gap between them increases, and carbon deposits may appear on the surface. In some cases, the insulator is damaged.
Because of this, the spark becomes weaker and works unstably. The mixture does not burn completely, misfires occur, and the driver begins to feel vibrations at idle, jerks, and worsening acceleration.
The consequences can manifest not only in dynamics. With misfires, fuel consumption can increase by one or two liters per 100 kilometers. The cylinder works inefficiently, the driver presses the accelerator pedal harder, and the electronics additionally increase fuel supply, trying to compensate for the resulting disruptions. This creates a vicious circle: power decreases, and consumption increases.
Ignoring misfires is also dangerous. Unburned gasoline can enter the exhaust system and cause the catalytic converter to overheat. A flashing Check Engine light is a particularly serious warning. Such a signal indicates active misfires, and continuing to drive in this condition can increase the cost of repairs.
However, simply buying a new set of spark plugs immediately after the symptoms appear is not always wise. If a new spark plug soon becomes covered with carbon deposits or oil, the problem is likely deeper.

Carbon deposits may indicate an overly rich fuel mixture, while oil on the spark plug may indicate engine wear or sealing problems. In such a case, replacing the spark plugs will only eliminate the consequences for a short time.
What is the danger of low eco-class gasoline
A separate problem is related to fuel quality. K4, K3, and even K2 gasoline are found on the market, and one of the most alarming parameters is the sulfur content.
For K5 gasoline, the limit is no more than 10 mg of sulfur per kilogram of fuel. In K3, its content can be 15 times higher, and in K2 - 50 times. Other characteristics of such fuel are also not encouraging.
The situation can be particularly unpleasant on high-speed highways, where the choice of gas stations is limited. With calm driving, the consequences of bad fuel may not appear immediately. But intensive operation and sharp accelerations can lead to serious damage, up to piston burnout.
Moreover, the negative effect does not necessarily arise after one refueling. The consequences can accumulate gradually - over thousands of kilometers and even several years.
The difficulty also lies in the fact that the exhaust gas cleaning system is the first to suffer. The more complex it is, the faster and more expensive the elimination of consequences can be. At the same time, the service life of the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors decreases.
If the injectors start to overfuel, theoretically even a hydraulic shock is possible. However, a much more likely consequence is piston burnout.
Advertised additives can slightly change fuel characteristics, but they cannot remove sulfur from it. Therefore, if you have doubts about the quality of gasoline, it makes sense to ask specialists to check the operating parameters of the injectors during computer diagnostics at your next service visit.
What you can check yourself
Before going to the service, the driver can collect certain information about the nature of the malfunction. This will at least help narrow down the range of possible causes.
First of all, pay attention to the following signs:
- Is the Check Engine light on the dashboard on?
- At what point does the engine start to choke - when cold or specifically during acceleration?
- Does the malfunction depend on the weather - does it manifest in dampness?
- Is there black smoke from the exhaust pipe?
- Are there crackling or popping sounds when driving?
- Is moisture visible on the spark plug or ignition system cover?
- How contaminated are the air and fuel filters?
- Are there any problems with the fuel pump?
- Do sparks appear on the wires when checking in the dark?

Such primary diagnostics do not replace a full car inspection, but they allow you to understand in which direction to look for the malfunction.
The main thing is not to perceive every jerk when pressing the accelerator pedal as a death sentence for the engine. The cause may be elementary: moisture, a filter, or a worn spark plug. But if the car continues to lose power, misfires appear, smoke, or the Check Engine light flashes, it is no longer worth delaying diagnostics. Some relatively minor malfunctions, with prolonged operation, can turn into a much more expensive problem.
