J.D. Power has released its 2025 China Initial Quality Study (IQS) for gasoline vehicles, based on a survey of 19,913 owners who purchased their vehicles between July 2024 and March 2025. The average problem per 100 vehicles (PP100) score increased by 17 points to 229, indicating a decline in quality. The main complaints are related to infotainment systems, seats, driver assistance systems, and voice control. Experts attribute this to competitive pressure: manufacturers, in an effort to maintain market share amid the growing popularity of hybrids and electric vehicles, are sacrificing quality.
The top-ranked models include the Honda Accord in the large midsize sedan category, the Geely Coolray among compact SUVs, the Lexus NX in the compact premium SUV segment, and the Chery Tiggo 9 among large midsize SUVs. Chinese brands such as Geely and Chery dominate the SUV categories, but their presence in the sedan and hatchback segments is limited. Some of these models, including the Geely Coolray and Chery Tiggo 9, are available in the Russian market.
The decline in quality raises questions about the balance between price and reliability. By reducing costs, manufacturers risk their reputation, which is especially noticeable in the mass segments. Nevertheless, the success of Honda, Geely, Lexus, and Chery shows that individual models are capable of combining innovation and reliability while remaining attractive to buyers.
