BMW is preparing a significant update for its compact X1 crossover, which goes beyond the standard mid-cycle restyling. The model will receive design elements of the Neue Klasse, including sharper exterior lines and modern interior technologies. This could be the beginning of a new generation, similar to how the 1-Series update evolved into a full redesign. The third generation X1, launched in mid-2022, has already reached three years of age, and prototypes under heavy camouflage confirm the large-scale changes.
The appearance of the X1 will be transformed: the front will feature a narrow radiator grille, sharp LED headlights reminiscent of the iX3, as well as a redesigned bumper, hood, and fenders, softening the aggressive contours of the M Sport version. On the sides, there will be retractable door handles, more streamlined surfaces, and aerodynamic mirrors. The rear will change dramatically: L-shaped lights will give way to elongated blocks separated by an emblem, and the license plate will be lowered onto the tailgate. Designers will add new alloy wheel options for a modern silhouette.
The interior will feature Panoramic iDrive with a thin display at the base of the windshield and a trapezoidal touchscreen infotainment system – possibly 17.9 inches in size, as in the iX3. This will be complemented by a four-spoke steering wheel and updated upholstery materials. The range of powertrains will remain the same: from mild hybrids to plug-in hybrids and the electric iX1 with front or all-wheel drive and a range of 415–475 km. Efficiency improvements are expected through new batteries, motors, and aerodynamics. The debut is possible as early as 2026, as part of BMW's plan to release 40 models with Neue Klasse by 2027.
